There are certain signs that indicate that a chipped tooth is a dental emergency, and learning more about the more severe signs of a chipped tooth is important for ensuring that you get the treatment you need after one occurs. This can help prevent further concerns, such as a tooth infection or tooth loss, from occurring.

Signs of a serious chipped tooth

Every instance of a broken tooth is different, but there are more common signs that indicate that the chip is severe. If one or more severe signs of a chipped tooth are present, then it is encouraged to visit the dentist as soon as possible.

Severe pain and sensitivity

Chipped teeth are often the result of a blow to the mouth, teeth grinding or biting down too hard on food or ice. These events naturally cause pain. Sensitivity often results because the deeper layers of the tooth that contain nerves and blood vessels are exposed. Pain from a minor chip can typically be treated through over-the-counter medication and a cold compress. However, more severe pain and sensitivity often require prompt treatment from an experienced dentist.

Excessive gum swelling

Minor gum swelling is to be expected after a chipped tooth. However, severe swelling is a sign that more serious concerns may develop. If left untreated, a chipped tooth can worsen and cause a tooth infection, which requires more extensive treatment to keep the tooth from becoming lost. When excessive gum swelling is treated in the earliest stages, it is relatively easy for a dentist to control the inflammation and take action to reduce it and prevent it from causing more serious complications.

Uncontrollable bleeding

The gums are often damaged when a chipped tooth occurs, which can lead to significant bleeding. In addition, a tooth that is severely damaged can cause bleeding as well. A minor chip may not cause much bleeding, and a small amount of bleeding can often be managed by placing a clean gauze on the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes until the bleeding stops. However, if the bleeding continues for an extended period of time or suddenly worsens, it is a sign that the issue requires emergency dental treatment.

Damage to the tooth root

The root of the tooth may become damaged if the chip extends too far toward the gum line. If the chip is large and looks as if the root of the tooth may have been exposed, then it is time to see a dentist as soon as possible. This is because the risk of a tooth infection is highest when the root of the tooth is more vulnerable to bacteria and food particles.
