Smile Makeover

A General Dentist Discusses When To Consider A Smile Makeover

Your dentist might recommend a smile makeover if you are unhappy with the way your teeth look. Smile makeovers involve performing multiple cosmetic treatments that address all the things that ruin your smile. Every person gets a unique experience for their smile makeover based on the condition of their teeth.

Figuring out when you need a smile makeover

Here are some of the dental issues a dentist might opt to address during a smile makeover:

1. Stained teeth

Teeth become discolored regardless of how well they are taken care of. They are regularly exposed to powerful coloring agents in foods and beverages called tannins, and these chemicals can lead to permanent stains developing deep inside a tooth. Some of these tannins are so powerful they can even discolor plastics used to store such foods. An obvious example of that is pasta sauce.

Teeth also become discolored as a result of the thinning of enamel that occurs as a person ages. Habits like smoking also promote stains and discoloration forming on teeth.

Dentists have multiple ways to deal with stained and discolored teeth. Teeth whitening treatments are the go-to way to whiten teeth, and they are effective on stains caused by aging, tobacco or the tannins in foods and beverages.

Other types of stains, like those caused by tetracycline antibiotics, tooth decay or being overexposed to fluoride are not responsive to whitening treatments. Restorations like composite bonding, veneers or crowns can be used to hide such stains.

2. Poorly aligned teeth

Poor teeth alignment ruins the appearance of a person's smile and makes it harder to properly clean teeth. Dentists often address these problems with oral appliances like braces and clear aligners. These devices work by pushing on the wearer's teeth, slowly moving them to an improved alignment over time.

Dentists can also fix poor teeth alignment with veneers. These restorations do not improve teeth alignment per se, but they do create the impression of well-aligned teeth. Veneers are cemented to the front part of teeth, and they can be used to hide flaws. Multiple veneers can be strategically placed on a patient's teeth to make their teeth appear better aligned. This approach is typically used if the patient has other issues that need to be fixed with veneers like stained or deformed teeth.

3. Long teeth

Teeth often appear abnormally long when a person has gum disease. This can be the result of gum disease or poor brushing technique. Teeth that appear abnormally long ruin the appearance of a person's smile, but the condition can be fixed with treatments like gum grafting. Donor tissues are extracted from other parts of the mouth and used to cover up exposed teeth roots. As a result, the patient's smile is normalized.
